Selling LEGO in Australia: Sealed, Retired and Used Sets

MV Guides · LEGO

LEGO is one of the few toys that can go up in value after it leaves the shelves. Whether a set is worth more than you paid comes down to which set it is, whether it's still sealed, and how complete it is.

1. Find the set number

Every LEGO set has a number on the box and the instructions, like 75192 for the big Millennium Falcon. That number is how buyers search and how prices are compared, so always include it. On MVCollect there's a field for it.

2. Sealed, opened or built

Be honest about completeness. Buyers will check every bag and minifigure.

3. Retired sets

LEGO stops making each set after a while ("retires" it). Once shop stock runs out, prices for popular retired sets, especially big Star Wars, Technic, Ideas and Icons sets, often rise. That's why sealed retired sets can sell well above their original price.

4. Minifigures

Minifigures can be worth a lot on their own, and some sets are mostly valued for theirs. If you're selling a used set, check every minifigure is there and in good shape, including small parts like weapons and hair pieces.

5. Box condition

For sealed sets, the box matters: crushed corners, dents, sun fading and torn seals all lower the price. Store sealed sets flat, in the dark and away from damp.

6. Knock-off bricks

Copies of popular sets are sold cheaply online. Genuine LEGO bricks have "LEGO" moulded on top of every stud. Copies don't, and usually come in plain bags with blurrier printing on the box. Only genuine LEGO can be listed on MVCollect.

7. Price and post it

Look up what the same set number, in the same condition, actually sold for, and convert from US dollars if needed. MVCollect's Market Value guide shows real sold prices under LEGO as sales come in. To post, put the LEGO box inside a bigger shipping box with padding all round, and send it tracked. LEGO posts as a parcel on MVCollect, priced from the weight and size you enter.
